McStas - A neutron ray-trace simulation package

McStas is a general tool for simulating neutron scattering instruments and experiments. It is actively supported by Risø DTU, NBI KU and ILL

Simulated scattering from a hollow-cylinder vanadium sample.

The plot shows the intensity of scattered neutrons (red is highest intensity). The sample is at the center of the sphere with the neutron beam coming from the left. Clearly seen is the shadowing effect of the sample causing a lower intensity opposite the beam. Also seen is the effect of the non-symmetric geometry of the sample, causing lower intensity directly above and to the side of the sample.

Recent news

May 18th, 2009: McStas related slides / posters from ICNS

We have gathered talk and poster material from ICNS 2009 in a special conference page. Work by the McStas team and close connections have been added.

If you feel like contributing your own talk/poster, please send a pdf to Peter Willendrup

We would also like thank those of the ICNS attendees that were in our workshop or came by our posters for interesting discussions.

April 14th, 2009: Positions open in McXtrace project

As you may have read earlier, the danish McStas partners and ESRF started the parallel McXtrace X-ray simulation project on january 1st. One position at Risø DTU has been filled already, but we are seeking more people for the project.

Please consult the McXtrace project page and the list of vacancies at University of Copenhagen.

April 8th, 2009: McStas 1.12a + Ubuntu 8.10 Live-DVD

An updated version of our "boot'n'run" Ubuntu dvd with preinstalled McStas 1.12 has been uploaded - grab it from the dedicated download page.

April 8th, 2009: Minor bug in McStas 1.12a (not to be updated)

It seems that one of the example instruments (prisma2.instr) can not be compiled with McStas 1.12 and the newest version of gcc, 4.3.2. Using the older, stable gcc 3.4 works just fine.

April 2nd/3rd, 2009: McStas 1.12a released

The long awaited update release, McStas 1.12a is finally available, grab it from the download page.

The changes since last stable release (1.12) are available here.

McStas 1.12a is essentially a bugfix release, and the last release in the 1.x series. McStas 2.0 will be released late 2009 / early 2010 and will introduce new features that will likely break ceartain backward compatibility, hence we move from the 1.x series.

April 1st, 2009: McStas satellite event during ICNS 2009

The McStas team are happy to announce that a McStas event has been arranged in connection with ICNS 2009 in Knoxville, TN.

The event will take place

May 3rd 2009, 9:00 AM - 12 NOON, room 300 c/d, Knoxville convention centre.

- possibly a supplementary hands-on session for new users will take place during the afternoon.

For more information and registration for the event, see the event page.

February 21st, 2009: Other news

As you have probably noticed, the update release McStas 1.12a has been delayed quite a bit... Don't worry, it is still coming. Estimated release date is in early april - where we will also inform you about what to expect in the next release, McStas 2.0.

February 21st, 2009: Parallel X-ray effort: McXtrace

Since january 1st, the Danish part of the McStas team is involved in a similar X-ray simulation effort - McXtrace. The first public speaches on this new effort will take place at SMEXOS at the ESRF Feburary 24th-25th.

The two softwares will be independent, but to a large extent based on the same technology. We are also planning to have common developer workshops and as much interaction as possible to enable synergy and exchange of ideas.
